Two years ago today, police in Greece shot sixteen-year-old Kostas Fragoulis in the back of the head in Thessaloniki. Fragoulis was pronounced dead eight days later on Dec. 13. In a few-day span from Dec. 5 to Dec. 9, 2022, fiery protests took hold in several cities in Greece as communities across the country responded to the police shooting.

Fragoulis was the second person killed by police in Greece since teenager Alexis Grigoropoulos was killed in Exarcheia in 2008.

Unlike the US where nearly 1,000 people are killed by police each year, police killings in Greece are a rare occurrence. The most notable was fourteen years ago when police killed 15-year-old Alexis Grigoropoulos in Exarcheia, on Dec. 6, 2008. [2018 coverage]

There hadn’t been any police killings in Greece since Alexis Grigoropoulos, until 2021 when police killed 18 y/o Nikos Sampanis (link).

And then in 2022, Kostas Fragoulis was killed. Both Sampanis & Fragoulis were Roma teenagers. In 2023, another Roma was killed.

Roma community, solidarity groups & Kostas Fragoulis' family protest outside the Thessaloniki Courthouse, many burning €20 bills to signify the amount of gas Fragoulis allegedly put into his vehicle tank before driving off without paying & subsequently being killed by police.
